Puzzle fun…

The Seven Deadly Sins Puzzle Springbok Puzzles, 1967 artist: Christopher Hobbs
When I was kid, I remember every once is a while, my mom would go through a puzzle phase. There was one with thimbles, jelly beans, and one that contained a “clue” to solve a written mystery that was provided. Most of all, I remember the puzzle called “The Seven Deadly Sins”. It is a circular puzzles, with a center circle that serves as a hub. Seven other circles circumferate (is that a really word?!?!?) the hub and illustrate the seven sins. After years of sitting in dust, I pulled out the puzzle and Mom and I went to work. I had no real game plan other than sorting pieces by colors, and I started on Avarice, and my mom worked on Gluttony. I refused to use the box lid for help, and Mom decided she wouldn’t either. We had to use our memories and discuss what we remembered. After two afternoons, Saturday and today (although my mom worked on some last night, as I was out picking a friend from the airport), we completed the puzzle. The Seven Deadly Sins are (moving clockwise) Pride, Anger, Gluttony, Lust, Envy, Sloth and Avarice.
From an entertainment point of view, it was a nice activity to do with Mom. We listened to the oldies station one day, and watched the Cubs game (part of it) the second as we worked on it. From a spiritual point of view, it reminds me of how the Seven Deadly Sins comprise of both action oriented words and attitude oriented words. Something I should be aware of and take note when I feel envious of others, or find myself getting prideful of MY personal accomplishments, instead of being content with what God has provided, or realizing that God gave me talents or perserverance to accomplish the task.
